Required Questions 1. The art criticism process is a process used to critique and evaluate your art or someone else's work of art. Step 1: You describe the art, you tell exactly what you see. Step 2: You analyze the art, you use the elements/principles to reflect upon the art form. Step 3: You interpret, like consider what the artist is trying to say, what caused the artist to say it, the historical meaning that surrounds the work of art, and why the work of art was created in this particular style. Step 4: You lastly evaluate the art, how successful or important is the work of art. 2. 3. Step 1 Describe: I see a picture of a male, he is upside down though, there are writing strips of paper around him, he looks like a younger boy. Step 2 Analyze: There is a lot of value around the mouth and under the eyes. I lined up the portrait onto the canvas proportionally so there would be enough space for the newspaper strips to add variety. I had to balance out the facial features with texture so there would be enough emphasis to the piece so that it would be formed like the picture. I decided not to put any color into the piece so it would have rhythm and harmony. Step 3 Interpret: I am trying to show the abstract and uniqueness of this piece because my brother (who the picture is of) has a unique and different personality just like the piece. I created it this way just because I wouldn't know how to do it with lots of color or a different medium, and I've done pieces like this before. Step 4 Evaluate: This work of art was sort of successful compared to the reference picture, but it was pretty important because I gave it to him for his birthday and he seemed pretty excited. Pick 3 Questions 1. What is art? Art isn't just a drawing or a painting, art is in our everyday world. Our world is art, art is in everything, everything is in art. By definition, ART is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. But art isn't just a production or a thought, its your creation, your imagination, your imagination is art. Art is beauty, it does indeed create emotion. It can be sad, fun, happy, exotic, joyful. Art has many different faces, and it just doesn't have to be a picture, ourself is a work of art. We were created by God on this earth and that is indeed art. 7. What is the point of this class? What did you get out of it? What I got out of this class was that art is not just a drawing or a painting, but that any thing can be a work of art, and that there are many different styles of art, different mediums. There's pen, pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, etc. The point of this class was for me to get better at art and become more of an artist by just taking a glance and looking around to see that art is everywhere. I learned what mediums I am good at and what ones I am not as good at. I also learned that anyone can be an artist, it just all depends on perspective. 4. What are some reasons why artists make art?
Some reasons artists make art I think is to either motivate, inspire, or entertain. When an artist makes a drawing or a painting, they might try to motivate other kids or people to make art or look around them at art. They might try to inspire you by creating a work of art that moves you or makes you want to change the world with art. They might inspire you to look around at all the art around them or in their environment. They might try to entertain you by creating a unique piece or a piece that looks intriguing or interesting to you. Artists make art basically to get more artists to make art so that the world can be more beautiful with art.

I chose to do stop motion animation for my project with a storyboard where I made paper cut-outs of my characters and figures. I chose this because it looked the coolest to me but I wasn't able to finish the whole entire project. I did my one page sketch of my animation, then I made a storyboard and drew my cut-outs, then cut them out and glued them onto the storyboard to look exactly like my sketch. What I found successful about my piece was the characters and how I made the pads. What I would change if I were to do this again would be to not make cut-outs and maybe find a faster and better way to make my stuff for my stop motion animation.
I accidentally threw out my reference photo for my piece, so I don't have it.
I used the mediums of pencil, magazine paper strips, glue, and a canvas. I drew my rough draft sketch in my sketch book and I turned out really liking, so I decided to use it as my portrait. I cut it out, and glued it onto the canvas; then I cut out the magazine paper strips and glued them down in the remaining spaces of the canvas. This is a picture of my younger 8-year-old brother Riley. I picked him because his birthday was coming up and at the time, didn't have anything for him, so I decided to make a portrait abstract piece for his present. I made a jolly rancher sculpture and I created it with slabs of clay and molding it with my hands into a cylinder. I then made the wrapper end part of the candy by slipping and scoring it to the cylinder piece of the candy. After that, I got it fired and then painted it with acrylic paint to make it look more realistic. I was inspired to make this piece when I was brainstorming ideas and I was sucking on a jolly rancher candy so I just did that. I think the center of the piece and the colors is the most successful thing about my piece. If I were to make this again, I would probably adjust one side of the wrapper to make it look like the other wrapper side so it looked proportional. I would sign up for sculpture class but my schedule doesn't work out the way the periods of sculpture are.
The Finland artist Hannu Huhtamo works in the dark to create his abstract light paintings. Each piece is created in-camera without the aid of photoshop. He has been light painting since 2008, but he shot his first light painting image back in the 90s. He was shooting a heavy metal band and wanted to draw out a pentagram with a lighter so he opened the shutter of his camera and created his first light painting image. www.hannuhuhtamo.com His work is inspiring to me because it looks so realistic and 3D, but he is really just painting it. The light and different colors of his work draw me into it. Hannu's work is very bright and very unique to other artists. My partner's name was Tyler.
She was doinga portrait of her mother She used a canvas and her background was text from a book/newpaper. She sketched her picture of her mom and then painted on top of it to make it look more realistic. She is not finished yet, she is adding a little title at the bottom of her portrait saying "#1 mom" i dont have my phone so I couldn't take a picture of my partner's piece. The process of printmaking has many steps. First, you pick out a picture you like and you draw it from that picture off of the web. Then, you trace the picture onto the carving block and use a sharpie to make black what you want black and leave blank what you want white. You then, start carving all the blanks to make the white. Then you roll ink onto the block and roll until you get an orange peely texture. After you have done that, you get a piece of paper that fits with the size of the block and smoothen the paper onto the wet ink block to get the print.
I incorporated the theme of line into this piece by giving line detail to the petals, the fuzz on the bee, and the whole entire piece. What I found successful about this piece was the fact that I was able to transport the detail in the flowers from the picture to the block and then onto the print and still have it look realistic. What I might change if I were to do this again would be to give more detail to the bee and make the lines more precise around the piece. |
